The Truth About Cloud Gaming

Clouding game isn't going to be around any time soon. Even if Onlive, GaiKai, or PS Cloud work as they claim it wont be without flaw. Streaming games isn't an easy task, and honestly, we don't have the server technology to do it without a ton of lag. Sure, they have showed it off to the skeptics at Joystiq, but that was in a controlled environment.

Even then there was lag on a single player game, Mirror's Edge. Lag in a single player game? Come on. Could you imagine how bad it would be in online play? Thats the another thing, none of the services will have true Internet play. The technology is so cutting edge that the server's hardware is 100% custom made. They are so expensive that they had to divide the United State up in to three autonomous networks. You can't even play people on a different network!

"...They have a flaw where every time you add a server, you have to make a jump from one server to another before you go back to the gamer. It adds to the latency problem. "

Cloud Gaming Subscription Plans

But of course, you have to pay monthly to use the service. The monthly cost of the service will easily cost you more money than just flat out buying a console. Suppose they're charging $24.95 a month for the service. Thats $300 dollars year or $1800 dollars a console generation. Thats over three times the cost of Xbox 360 Pro with a four year subscription to xbox live!

OnLive MicroConsole

It has to be the biggest gimmick in the video game industry. The MicroConsole isn't wireless, and that alone makes using a keyboard and mouse pretty much impossible. Could you imagine that? Draping a 20ft network cable accross your living room to your favorite collapsable coffee table. To your wired keyboard and mouse. Yep, thats right, Onlive doesn't have a wireless keyboard and mouse you can buy.

Q: Does the subscription cost include games?

A: No it does not. The price of each game is dependent on what the publisher finds reasonable. Remember, there is no such thing as a used game in the world of cloud gaming. If a game is released for $60 there is no hope of getting it cheaper any time soon.
